By DEAN REA/Correspondent/The Herald — The Oakridge Warriors were outmanned 3-1 but held their own during the season’s opening 7-on-7 football game Thursday afternoon at South Eugene High School.
No official score was kept during the hour-and-a-half game, which is much like touch football and involves constant running by the offensive team and no tackling on a 40-yard field.
Quarterback Wayc Salukin, a junior, threw primarily to Jamie Roach, Austin Hawkins and Dylan Stanton during the game played on synthentic turf under a cloudless sky. The quarterback has four seconds to get rid of the ball and no running plays are permitted.
The host Axe team fielded 27 players and rotated defensive and offensive units while the Warriors were able to rest two players during offensive and defensive series.
The Warriors, coached by Mark Osborn, switched to 7-on-7 football this season because of the small turnout resulting, in part, from the impact of COVID-19 on high school sports nationwide.
Oakridge is scheduled to return next Thursday to South Eugene High School for another game.
